Driver in Miami-Dade Police Shooting Identified and Charged

In Northwest Miami-Dade, a driver involved in a recent police shooting, has been identified and charged with attempted murder. The incident unfolded during what started as a routine traffic stop, ultimately resulting in shots fired, injuries, and a second arrest.

Routine Traffic Stop Escalates to Officer-Involved Shooting

The episode began with an attempted routine traffic stop by Miami-Dade Police in the area of Northwest 22nd Avenue and 64th Street. The driver, a 38-year-old male was behind the wheel of a white Dodge Challenger, and refused to stop, later crashing into an electric pole. There was a 40-year-old male also in the vehicle at the time.

Officer Injured as Driver Accelerates

As officers attempted to make contact, French reportedly accelerated towards them, striking and pinning one officer against his own vehicle. In response, the officer discharged his firearm, hitting French multiple times. The injured officer was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital with leg injuries.

Charges and Firearms Found in Vehicle

French faces charges of attempted murder of a police officer, and a stolen gun was discovered in the vehicle. Harris, the passenger, has been charged with resisting arrest and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. Notably, Harris had a prior charge three years ago related to assaulting his 5-year-old son.

Neighborhood Witness Accounts and Crime Scene

Residents in the neighborhood observed the police pursuit, expressing concerns about potential harm to bystanders. The scene quickly turned into a crime scene with blocked roads, police tape, and numerous detectives investigating the incident.

Status of Victims and Legal Proceedings

The injured officer has been released from the hospital, and the driver, currently receiving treatment at Ryder Trauma Center, will be transferred to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center once stable. Harris, who appeared in court, remains in custody. The motive behind the incident remains unclear.
